Our verdict

Zoho Books is the better-localised and cheaper option for UAE VAT and corporate tax. QuickBooks wins on accountant familiarity — and if your accountant files from QuickBooks, that convenience is usually worth the premium.

Zoho Books and QuickBooks Online are the two accounting platforms UAE small businesses most often compare. Both handle invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation and VAT. The real differences are localisation, price and which platform your accountant prefers to work in.

UAE VAT has applied at 5% since January 2018. Corporate tax applies at 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000 for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. Your accounting software needs to support both: correct tax invoices and VAT returns, and clean records that hold up when you prepare a corporate tax return. This page compares the two on that basis, with prices as shown in our directory.

Pricing

Starting prices as shown in our directory, checked Oct 2026. They are estimates taken from each vendor’s official pricing page, not quotes. Plans, currencies and inclusions change, so re-check the vendor’s pricing page before you buy and confirm whether VAT is added at checkout.

What FTA accreditation means for you

The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) administers UAE VAT and corporate tax, and it accredits certain tax accounting software. Our directory lists Zoho Books as FTA-accredited with UAE VAT return support. For QuickBooks Online, we list UAE VAT as supported and recommend you confirm its accreditation status for your filing route.

Accreditation does not file your return for you, and it does not make your bookkeeping correct. It tells you the software has been reviewed against UAE tax requirements. You still need the right VAT treatment on every transaction, your Tax Registration Number (TRN) on your tax invoices, and someone who reviews the return before it is submitted.

Price, illustrated

On the vendors’ pages in October 2026, Zoho Books Standard was AED 60 per organisation per month billed annually (UAE pricing, excluding VAT) and QuickBooks Online Simple Start USD 38 a month (US list price). Illustrative only: over 12 months that is AED 720 against USD 456 (roughly AED 1,675 at the pegged rate of AED 3.6725 to the dollar). Higher tiers, extra users and add-ons change this, so price the plan you would actually use.

The licence is rarely the biggest cost. Accountant hours usually are. If your accountant works faster in QuickBooks, a shorter month-end can outweigh the price difference. If they are comfortable in either, the lower licence and stronger localisation favour Zoho Books.

Getting ready for corporate tax

Corporate tax raises the bar on record keeping. You need business and personal spending kept apart, consistent categories, documented adjustments and an audit trail showing who changed what. Our directory notes that Zoho Books has corporate-tax-ready reporting and an audit trail built in, and that QuickBooks Online is capable with correct setup.

Whichever you choose, set it up properly at the start: a chart of accounts your accountant agrees with, tax codes mapped to the right UAE VAT treatments, and bank feeds or regular statement imports. Fixing a year of miscategorised entries later costs far more than an hour of setup now.

  • Agree the chart of accounts with your accountant.
  • Map every tax code to the correct UAE VAT treatment.
  • Reconcile bank accounts monthly, not at year end.
  • Restrict who can edit closed periods.

Payroll and WPS sit elsewhere

Do not treat either platform as your WPS payroll system unless the vendor confirms it for your setup. In the UAE, salaries for mainland employees registered with MOHRE are paid through the Wage Protection System, usually via a bank or exchange house. Many SMEs run payroll in a dedicated HR or payroll tool, or through their bank, and post a summary journal to the accounting system each month.

Choose Zoho Books if…

  • You are a new or small UAE company and price matters.
  • You want software that is FTA-accredited for UAE VAT.
  • You need Arabic invoice templates and AED as the base currency.
  • You already use Zoho CRM, People or other Zoho apps.
  • Your accountant is happy to work in Zoho Books.

Choose QuickBooks Online if…

  • Your external accountant works in QuickBooks and wants familiar ledgers.
  • Bank feeds and reconciliation are your biggest monthly task.
  • You rely on apps from a large third-party marketplace.
  • You have confirmed its accreditation status suits your VAT filing route.
  • A shorter month-end with your accountant is worth a higher licence.

Switching between them

Switching accounting systems is more disruptive than switching most software, because the ledger is a legal record. The cleanest point to move is the start of a financial year or, at minimum, the start of a VAT period. Moving mid-period means reconciling two systems for the same return, which costs more in accountant hours than the licence difference.

Agree the plan with your accountant before you start. Decide whether you will import full transaction history or only opening balances, the chart of accounts, and open invoices and bills. Keep read-only access to the old system, or a complete export, for as long as you need to keep records. UAE tax rules require businesses to keep records for a number of years, so confirm the period with your tax adviser and do not cancel the old subscription until your archive is safe.

Frequently asked questions

Can I migrate later?

Yes, but plan for it. Migrating a full year of transactions mid-tax-year costs more in accountant hours than the licence difference.

Pricing is taken from official vendor pages and dated; where a vendor does not publish list pricing we label it a custom quote, and converted AED figures are estimates. A free trial is never described as a free plan.
